Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido, the northern island of the Japanese archipelago. It is famous for Hokkaido University, founded in 1876. Dr. William S. Clark of Massachusetts briefly became the vice principal; he is responsible for the infamous quote "Boys Be Ambitious", which is engraved on his statue on campus.
