On the way to Hakodate, we stopped at
Shiraoi to visit the Ainu museum. The Ainu were the original inhabitants of Hokkaido (and perhaps all of Japan). They have mostly been integrated into the current culture, but traditional Ainu language and culture are still studied and preserved here. This museum is similar to places like
Fort Boonesboro in the U.S.
